Recipes

A recipe box for one household, built for a phone in one hand: swipe through dinners, and the shopping list writes itself.

What it does

Recipes is one box shared by a household rather than one per person. Swipe through the deck to pick what to cook this week, and the week's ingredients turn into one shopping list, merged and grouped by aisle.

Both people see the same box live: tick an item off at the store on one phone and it clears on the other.

Features

  • The swipe deck

Right for this week, left for not now, up to open. A veggie-only toggle, an undo, and arrow keys on a desktop.

  • A list sorted by aisle

Every ingredient for the week merged by name and summed across units, in the order of the store's own aisles, with the pantry staples kept apart. Checked rows drop to In the cart.

  • Cook mode

Full screen, one step at a time in large type, with an ingredients drawer and the screen kept awake.

  • Recipes that scale

A servings stepper rescales every ingredient; tick off ingredients and dim steps as you go.

  • Add from a link

Paste a recipe page and its structured recipe data is read in, or type one in with one ingredient per line.

How it was built

A small Node service and a vanilla JavaScript client in the shared shell. Every change bumps a revision and is pushed to the other open phones over server-sent events.

The box is open to the owner and to anyone given the recipes grant; everyone else signed in is turned away. Nothing is ever hard-deleted: a removed recipe is archived.
